Description

ESS accelerator has completed its second phase of Beam on Dump commissioning and reached a peak beam power of 17 MW, corresponding to 14% of the nominal 125 MW peak power. At this stage, machine protection is critical and reliable operation can only be achieved if the beam instrumentation systems implementing protection functions deliver the required performance, and if their integration and verification as part of the machine protection system have been completed. In this paper, the integration of the various beam instrumentation systems with the machine protection system is reviewed. The initial requirements and interface assumptions that guided their implementation are presented and compared with observations made during accelerator commissioning. The review identifies the functions that performed as intended, as well as the technical and operational modifications required to achieve reliable system-level operation.
