VISA Information

1. Visa Exemption Arrangements

Japan’s Visa Exemption Arrangements allows citizens of many countries to enter Japan without obtaining a visa in advance for short‑term stays such as tourism, business meetings, or visiting friends and relatives.
Most visa‑exempt visitors may stay for up to 90 days, although some nationalities have shorter permitted periods (e.g., 15 days for Indonesia and Thailand, 30 days for Brunei and Qatar), or may be subject to special passport conditions.
This means that most travelers do not need to apply for a visa before coming to Japan, provided they meet all passport and entry requirements.

2. List of Visa‑Exempt Countries

Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) publishes the official list of countries and regions eligible for visa‑free entry.

This page includes:

  • Length of permitted stay by nationality
  • Notes on special passport requirements (e.g., ICAO‑compliant ePassports)

3. If You Need to Apply for a Visa

Travelers who are not eligible for visa‑free entry must obtain a visa before arrival, as Japan does not issue visas on arrival. Please check the following MOFA website carefully.

General Visa Application Process
  1. Please prepare the documents required. The necessary documents differ depending on your nationality, so please check the details on the page above.

  2. Some countries require a Letter of Guarantee and an Invitation Letter for the application. QST will prepare these documents, so please contact the LOC (ARW2026.LOC@qst.go.jp). As it generally takes about two weeks to prepare the documents, please contact us well in advance.

  3. You need to submit your application to the Japanese Embassy/Consulate with jurisdiction over your place of residence. It cannot be submitted within Japan. Please refer to the website of the Diplomatic Mission of Japan (Embassy, Consulate-General, or Consular Office) on where you will submit your application. Before preparing your application documents, we strongly recommend that you contact the diplomatic mission to confirm the application procedures and the required documents.

  4. Once the application is accepted, the diplomatic mission will conduct a review. If there are no particular issues with the application, the review usually takes about one week from acceptance; however, depending on nationality, it may take around one month.

  5. Since the applicant must go in person to collect the visa, please also take into account the time required for that.

If eligible, some applicants may also use Japan’s eVISA online application system:
