Description

This poster describes the instrumentation and control (I&C) design for Activated Cooling Loops (ACL) 1 and 2 for the Second Target Station (STS) project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The design approach emphasizes reliability and availability. ACL1 cools the rotating tungsten target; it is mission-critical for preventing target damage. ACL2 cools supporting target components and carries a lower functional risk. A Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) identified the highest-risk failure modes as those associated with control hardware and monitoring functions. This result directly informed the final architecture: ACL1 was designed with a high-availability redundant control system and redundant power supplies, while ACL2 adopted a simpler non-redundant design consistent with its lower risk rating. The poster will discuss the risk-informed design process, the rationale for selecting redundancy, and considerations for balancing reliability, availability, and system complexity in accelerator target cooling applications.
