Description

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) linear accelerator (LINAC) operates with superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities maintained at 1.8 K. The cavities are cooled by a continuously running liquid helium refrigeration system. The cryogenic plant has supported uninterrupted operation for nearly two decades, enabling stable cavity performance and reliable accelerator availability. In this presentation, I will discuss our experience operating at such low temperatures with high reliability, how past and present challenges have been tackled, and how we are planning and preparing for higher power operation following the Proton Power Upgrade (PPU).
