Description

Machine protection systems in accelerator facilities often require temporary masking or modification of interlocks during dedicated study and commissioning activities. Traditionally, such configurations are applied manually, which introduces risks related to human error, inconsistent settings, and reduced reliability.

To address these challenges, an activity-based selection system has been developed that enables controlled and automated application of predefined configurations for known operational activities. The system allows authorized operators to select approved machine study modes, upon which the corresponding protection settings are automatically applied across relevant subsystems. When the activity is completed or time out, the system ensures that configurations are safely reverted, while preserving any pre-existing valid states. Additional features include mutual exclusion between activities, error detection during state transitions, and integration with SIS (software interlock system) functions to maintain protection integrity.

By replacing manual configuration of machine protection masks with a structured and centrally managed approach, the system reduces operational complexity and minimizes the risk of incorrect or forgotten settings. This improves overall machine reliability and enhances the reproducibility of study conditions.
