Description
Maintaining high beam availability across CERN’s accelerator complex is underpinned by continuous fault tracking and the systematic collection of long-term operational data. Multi-year fault data captures machine and sub-system availability, trends, and root causes — such as a cooling plant issue impacting power converters — across the entire facility. This provides a robust empirical baseline to guide targeted reliability improvements.
Recent developments and operational highlights include:
- Stable & High Availability: Long-term data tracking confirms high
performance across the complex. Consolidation proposals are
systematically ranked by their availability impact to ensure high
availability is maintained. - Trends & Insights: Multi-year
evaluations distinguish major outage outliers from recurring short
faults across facilities and hardware systems. - Data Granularity & Feedback: Active surveys and engagement driven by the Reliability and
Availability Working Group (RAWG) enhance data quality and improve
granularity. - AFT Tool Evolution: Insights from ten years of
accelerator fault tracking (AFT) inform requirements for a
next-generation tool, prioritizing automated data processing and
asset management integration.
This poster outlines CERN’s progress in availability tracking and key lessons learned. Based on these data the recent performance trends for the different hardware systems across the entire complex are summarized.
