Description

The integration of the new Swiss Light Source (SLS) after the upgrade project SLS 2.0* into the ongoing operation of the Paul Scherrer Institute posed a major challenge, as commissioning had to be carried out without additional personnel alongside the 24/7 operation of three other accelerators.
The increased complexity of operations placed high demands on control room personnel. Early coordination between the operations and beam dynamics groups, as well as proactive personnel planning prior to shutdown, resulted in the formation of a special commissioning team with representatives from each shift group.
This structure enabled efficient commissioning, allowing all milestones to be achieved ahead of schedule. The continuous involvement of the operations department ensured effective knowledge transfer to all shift groups and enabled high acceptance and seamless integration of SLS 2.0, so that problems could be solved quickly and effectively by control room personnel.
