Description

The GSI accelerator complex has continued user operation throughout the FAIR construction phase, while major technical changes and construction activities were taking place. We present operational and availability experience from 2012 to 2025, based on operational time records and fault reports from the GSI Operator Logbook (OLOG). Since 2020, our Availability Working Group has systematically reviewed and reclassified recorded failures, allowing us to compare the main downtime contributors over several years. Despite ageing equipment and constraints from FAIR construction, overall accelerator availability has remained relatively stable. At the same time, the failure statistics reveal recurring weaknesses that are not always visible in the overall availability figures. We would like to share the lessons learned from this long-term analysis, particularly the importance of consistent failure classification and how these data help us identify and prioritize refurbishment needs for future FAIR operation.
