Description
J-PARC consists of the first-stage linear accelerator (LINAC), the intermediate-stage Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron (RCS), and the Main Ring (MR) in the final stage. It also comprises three experimental facilities: the Materials and Life Sciences Experimental Facility (MLF), which receives beams from the RCS; and the Neutrino Experimental Facility (NU) and Hadron Experimental Facility (HD), which receive beams from the MR. There are two primary safety systems in place for the operation of J-PARC. The first is the Personnel Protection System (PPS). The PPS manages personnel entering the radiation-controlled areas of each facility—such as during maintenance work—and monitors whether safe operation is possible based on factors such as personnel access to the facilities and the impact of radiation on the surrounding environment. Furthermore, if an anomaly is detected through PPS monitoring, the accelerator beam is immediately shut down to ensure personnel safety. The second is the Machine Protection System (MPS). The MPS monitors the operating status of components—including the electromagnet power supplies used in the accelerator and experimental facilities—and, upon detecting an anomaly, halts beam operation or, if necessary, aborts the beam. This system protects the components of each facility and prevents a deterioration in maintainability by suppressing excessive beam loss. In this poster outlines the two safety systems—PPS and MPS—and presents a summary of past interlock activation events, categorized by type, along with the associated system downtime. It also discusses the impact of these systems on safety system operations and the operational availability of each facility.
