Description
CERN operates and maintains several large cryogenic systems with complex architecture necessary for the operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its detectors ATLAS and CMS. Continuous operation of the accelerator & detectors throughout Run2 (2015-2018) has provided the cryogenics group with valuable information on the failure modes of rotating machinery in helium compressor stations. This experience coupled with targeted analyses has allowed implementation of a reliability improvement plan to enhance the overhaul availability of the cryogenic system. This poster highlights the main mechanical failures identified during Run2 and outlines the associated consolidations implemented during Long Shutdown 2 (2019-2020). It will also, demonstrate the added value of adapted maintenance methodologies within the improvement process, especially continuous monitoring of vibration and oil analysis. Finally, we will report on the obtained operation results showing the decreasing number of failures during Run3 (2021-2026), positively impacting the availability of the cryogenics for LHC accelerator & detectors and demonstrating the efficiency of the implemented measures.
