Description
The European Spallation Source (ESS) is progressively developing and commissioning Personnel Safety Systems (PSSs) for new neutron instruments, a process that will continue through the transition from facility commissioning into steady-state operation. Consequently, instrument PSSs are at different lifecycle stages, with some commissioned and prepared for operation, some undergoing commissioning, and others still being designed or planned. Experience gained throughout design and commissioning generates lessons learned and identifies potential improvements. An improvement identified during the commissioning of one PSS may also be applicable to previously commissioned systems, as well as systems currently under development or yet to be developed. For safety-critical systems designed to protect personnel, it is important that such improvements are systematically captured and tracked across systems. The challenge lies in assessing their applicability and maturity, and determining the appropriate timing for implementation across systems at different lifecycle stages. Throughout this process, controlled change is essential to maintaining safety, maintainability, and consistency in system design and user interaction.
