Description
This poster presents practical simulation techniques developed and applied within PLC-based control systems at ISIS to improve system reliability and reduce commissioning risk. The work covers methods used to test and validate control software when physical hardware was unavailable, identification and modelling of vacuum system behaviour within the PLC to enable early leak detection, and development of first-order mathematical models of heat exchanger systems. The poster also discusses the use of redundant sensor strategies for improved reliability and demonstrates how simulation environments were used to identify and resolve PLC logic issues prior to commissioning. These approaches have significantly reduced commissioning time, improved fault detection capabilities, and enhanced overall system reliability, illustrating the value of simulation as an effective complement to traditional test benches.
