Description

Particle accelerator facilities operate in environments where radiation, limited accessibility, and long intervention times can affect equipment reliability and machine availability. Monitoring environmental and operational conditions is therefore essential for fault diagnosis and maintenance.

At CERN, a radiation-tolerant wireless IoT platform was developed initially around the Battery Radiation Monitor (BatMon), providing distributed radiation measurements to correlate equipment failures with the local radiation environment. The platform has evolved into a multi-purpose sensing infrastructure supporting temperature, humidity, water-leak, vacuum monitoring, and lately monitor accelerator communication infrastructure, while reducing cabling and installation requirements.

The technology is being explored beyond CERN through collaboration with J-PARC, where BatMon devices have been deployed for radiation monitoring and reliability studies of RF equipment, including Finemet amplifiers.

This evolution demonstrates the potential of radiation-tolerant wireless sensing to increase infrastructure observability, improve fault diagnosis, simplify instrumentation deployment, reduce intervention time, and ultimately contribute to higher accelerator availability.
