Description
With the transition from machine commissioning to beamline commissioning and user operation, the reliability and availability of the SLS 2.0 accelerator complex have become increasingly critical. Rapid and systematic fault handling is essential to minimize downtime and protect the accelerator. This contribution presents the key fault-handling systems developed for SLS 2.0: the Injection Guard application to prevent unsafe injection attempts, the controlled emergency beam-dump system to ensure safe beam aborts when severe fault conditions occur, and the Post Mortem application to enable rapid fault data analysis.
The Injection Guard enforces safe and reliable injection by monitoring critical parameters and preventing injection when predefined safety thresholds are exceeded. For severe fault scenarios, a controlled emergency beam abort using a fast beam dump controller, a fast beam dump magnet, and a dedicated beam dump protects sensitive machine components such as the thin vacuum chamber. The Post Mortem system captures and logs comprehensive fault data for rapid analysis, supporting root-cause identification and verification of a successful emergency beam dump.
Together, these systems form an integrated approach to fault management that enhances operational robustness and accelerator availability, providing reliable light delivery for beamlines. Operational experience gained during early user operation demonstrates the effectiveness of these systems and provides a foundation for continuous improvement and long-term operational reliability.
